One of my favourite things to do is share book recommendations. My poor friends are inundated with suggestions of books that they simply HAVE to read. It’s one of the big reasons that I have and run This Northern Gal. I love sharing the things that I love.
With that in mind, I thought I’d share some book recommendations. This time however, they are based off other books. The idea is that if you like Book A, you might just like Book B. Some of these recommendations probably won’t be a surprise to you because they are books that I love and have raved about. I’ve picked three book pairs in this style but if you like this type of post, I can have a stalk of my shelves and do some more. Sound good? Let’s dive in!
First up, if you liked Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale, I think you should try Maresi by Maria Turtschaninoff. This is the story of Maresi and the Red Abbey, a haven for women on a remote island. When a newcomer seeks sanctuary, the safety of the Red Abbey is threatened. In this thrilling and magical tale, the women come together to fight for their home. If you want to know a little more, you can find my review of Maresi here.
If Bram Stoker’s Dracula is more your cup of tea, you should take a look at Sheridan Le Fanu’s Carmilla. This novella is a creepy vampire tale that may have inspired Stoker’s writing. It packs a lot in to not very many pages but is just as unsettling as the infamous Count.
Finally, if you are a fan of The Bloody Chamber by Angela Carter, I highly recommend checking out Jen Campbell’s The Beginning of the World in the Middle of the Night. This is a collection of powerful, magical and creepy stories that mix the everyday and the unknown. I actually reviewed The Beginning of the World in the Middle of the Night on This Northern Gal, so click here if you want to know more of my thoughts on it.
Let me know if you try any of these books!
