REVIEW: Crescent City

I am in love with this book.

Even though I finished it a couple of days ago, I can’t stop thinking about it. And I definitely had a book hangover from it that I am just recovering from now.

I was utterly immersed in this book and honestly struggled to put it down. The night I finished it, I stayed up far later than was wise because I just kept muttering ‘one more chapter’.

For those who are unfamiliar, this is the latest book from Sarah J. Maas who is renowned for her fantasy novels. This one, unlike her previous two series, is an adult fantasy with a slightly older protagonist than long time readers are used to.

That protagonist is Bryce Quinlan, a half-human fae who is struggling to recover from a tragedy. The former party girl is left to put together the pieces of her former life in an attempt to find answers to some very uncomfortable questions.

I think Bryce might be favourite Maas protagonist so far because I loved how wonderfully complex and messy she was. Like Aelin (my other fave. Fryer doesn’t make the cut), she isn’t perfect but she is fierce and I love her. Watching her story unfold was utterly riveting and I was so very, very invested in the odd glimmer of happiness we were teased with. I truly cared about what would happen to Bryce as I raced through the carefully woven story.

This is a book to be devoured, with fast paced action and action and plenty of twists and turns.

It is a real skill of Sarah J Maas that she writes such captivating stories that I can quite happily and easily lose myself in.

This brings me quite nicely to my final point about Crescent City: this I think is Maas’ finest writing yet. Though I loved her previous books, I could really feel how much her writing has developed since that earlier work. It is far more organically representative , better crafted and with carefully thought out world building. There is true craft to this and I loved it so, so much for it.

How long do I have to wait for the next one?!

  1. I only discovered Maas this year! Working my way through Throne of Glass, I’m going to be really sad when I finish it! It’s my new favourite series!
