Poetry and mythology? We all know that that’s a winning combination for me!
As such, it’s probably of no surprise that I picked Great Goddesses up when I was in Edinburgh and absolutely loved it when I finally got a chance to read it. I savoured this one, taking my time to really enjoy it and that made it all the sweeter.
This poetry collection by Nikita Gill is inspired by the Greek goddesses of myth. From Medusa to Athena (and a few I hadn’t even heard of), the pages of this book are crammed with wonderful words which celebrate the women of Ancient Greece. Like I said, some of these women are lesser known but I actually really enjoyed learning a little bit more about them. Some of these poems even inspired me to go and have a little research into some of the women I hadn’t heard of!
These poems are powerful and thought-provoking. Many of them have clear links to the modern world and provide Nikita Gill with a platform to discuss a 21st century society.
I had never read anything from Nikita Gill before but I think she might now be a new favourite. She has a truly phenomenal talent that I’m a little envious of! Some of her poems from this book were really, truly moving in the best way. I won’t be forgetting them in a hurry!
I loved Great Goddesses and I’m sure I’ll dip in and out again throughout the years. It is a collection I wholeheartedly recommend!
