I’m not a very good cook.
I’m also not a particularly brave cook.
Combine these two factors and you get a girl who favours simple recipes with as little risk as possible. In an effort to calm my fear of the kitchen, I’ve been making myself use it a little more (and have subjected housemates and parents alike to some ahem interesting dishes in the process).
Somewhere on this mission to learn to cook I concocted the world’s laziest breakfast dish. Now I know overnight oats are nothing new and I looked through hundreds of recipes when I was coming up with this but they have revolutionised my mornings.
Early classes don’t leave much time or motivation for making a proper breakfast so I was looking for something quick and easy that could give me those extra five minutes in the warmth of my bed. I just throw it together the night before and then tuck in as I slowly leave the land of dreams on a morning. Perfect.
To feed one bleary-eyed person, you will need.
- A container – I make up individual portions in jam jars as I can take them with me if I’m running really late. It’s also small enough not to get in the way in a communal fridge.
- One cup of oats.
- Half a cup of milk
- Half a cup of apple juice
- One teaspoon of cinnamon
Throw the ingredients into your container and hope you don’t make too much of a mess. Either grab your spoon and stir or stick the lid on and shake. Bonus points if you dance while you do it. If you’re channeling your inner Taylor Swift, make sure the lid is on tight or your housemates will not be impressed.
Stick it in the fridge and go catch some zzz’s.
8 hours later (if you listen to the experts), stumble to the fridge while you’re still rocking that beautiful bed head. Enjoy!
If you’re feeling fancy and didn’t hit snooze too many times, you can also chuck in some freshly chopped apple and maple syrup but it’s pretty delicious by itself! Oh and if the idea of cold oats on a freezing morning doesn’t float your boat, you can quickly pop it in the microwave for a couple of minutes and enjoy your tasty treat toasty.
If I can do it, you most definitely can. There’s nothing to burn or undercook or chop your finger off with. This is a really simple (and safe) recipe, if it can even be called that! Be warned though, it can get a little messy.
