I’ve hardly been subtle about my love for Balgove Larder over here on This Northern Gal. In fact, you can see just how much I enjoyed my trip in this post, if you are so inclined. However I had never managed to eat at the steak barn and, with time running out before I leave St Andrews for good, I bumped it up my priority list. My folks were also keen for a visit during grad week so it just so happens that my dad and I decided to take a visit as a belated Father’s Day treat.
Keeping an eye on my pennies meant that we didn’t actually go for steak, but the food we did choose was so. damn. good. It’s just a shame that I didn’t get to try it earlier.
The menu also has plenty of affordable options if you don’t quite have the champagne budget. For good quality, locally sourced food at a really reasonable price, I would definitely recommend a visit! If nothing else, you should go just for the chips, which were absolutely amazing.
My dad opted for the burger, with added bacon and cheese. It looked amazing! I think he would agree that it tasted even better than it looked too. I got some serious daughter points introducing him to it too.
I went for something different and got the pinwheel sausage and chips. It was packed full of flavour and super filling. I didn’t want it to end. I think you can pick up the same sausages in the farm shop itself, which I was very tempted by.
Best of all? The tasty food was accompanied by beautiful decor and super friendly staff. They really went out of their way to take care of us, even though we arrived as the steak barn opened (we were desperate for a table!) and it really made all the difference to our experience. It’s just a shame that I won’t be back for a while.
