Day nine? Day nine! I had to double check for a moment there! But it is right and today I’m chatting to Laura from Earth Warriors about an eco-friendly Christmas!

Hello and welcome to This Northern Gal! Would you like to introduce yourself?

Hello! My name is Laura Phoenix and I run Earth Warriors (previously Mutiny Zero Waste) in Darlington along with my husband Anthony Phoenix.
And what about your business? Don’t forget to tell us about that too!
Earth Warriors is an ethical and sustainable shop providing eco-friendly gifts, health foods, household refills and lots more!
We started in March 2019 when I was pregnant with our daughter and since then the business has gone from strength to strength. We have a wonderful community of Earth Warriors in Darlington who support us too!
You can really sense that community feel in the shop too! What are your plans this Christmas?
In the shop, we plan to show our customers an eco-friendly approach to Christmas with reusable gift bags and environmentally friendly gift options!
As a family we will be shutting off all our devices from Christmas Eve and snuggling down to watch Christmas films and eat our body weight in delicious vegan food for a couple of days of much needed rest!
That sounds amazing! I cannot wait to just sit and watch some Christmas films! If you had to pick one Secret Santa present from your shop, what would you choose?
Ooh that’s a tricky one! We have so many amazing gifts this year from local artists and makers. I would have to pick a Whimsickal candle or wax melts tin! They are 100% vegan, hand poured soya wax and made locally in Darlington!
A candle is always a good choice! What is your go to recommendation if someone comes into the shop and wants to take the first steps towards being eco friendly?
Start small and go room by room. The bathroom is a great place to start because its usually the place with the most plastic! You can change your toothbrush for a bamboo one, your toothpaste to a plastic free version, refill soaps and shampoos and buy loose soap!
When you put it like that, it sounds simple! What’s the best Christmas present that you ever received?
That’s a tricky one! As a child I was a huge fan of the Furby, but I don’t really remember Christmas gifts very well. I much prefer to spend time with loved ones and could easily do without the gift giving.
That quality time is so important! What’s next for you and your business in 2021?
We hope to expand our range of products to include more useful eco-friendly swaps for our customers to use and fingers crossed people will be allowed to sit in and drink a coffee soon without restrictions!
I’ll cross my fingers too. If you would to find out more about Earth Warriors, you can find their website here.
