Hello and welcome to This Northern Gal! Do you want to start by introducing yourself?

Hi I’m Zoe. I live and work in Darlington and I’m delighted you’ve asked my new candle and wax melt business Poppy Love Candles to be part of your Christmas blog!

Welcome Zoe! You run Poppy Love Candles. Tell us a little bit about your company!

Poppy Love Candles is a small local business that makes beautiful home made candles and wax melts from Coconut, Rapeseed and Soy waxes. Our waxes and fragrance oils are vegan and animal cruelty free.

There are a fabulous range of fragrances to choose from floral to fruity and woody to fresh. There’s definitely something for everyone!

Where did the idea come from?

I had always fancied trying a craft and started with crochet but I just wasn’t fast enough. A friend of mine had started making candles and so I asked her about it and she kindly gave me loads of tips to get started. When lockdown happened in March, I decided that was a good a time as any to give it a go. Although I was and still am, working full time as a Civil Servant, it’s been great to have Poppy Love Candles too!

What is your favourite thing about Poppy Love Candles?

My favourite thing about Poppy Love Candles is the the quality of the materials used. The candles are made from pure Coconut and Rapeseed wax. And the melts from Soy and other natural waxes. I love that they don’t contain paraffin and most importantly, no components have come from or been tested on animals.

That sounds wonderful and I love that they’re not tested on animals! Christmas is just around the corner. What are you most excited about?

I’m most excited about finding somewhere in my house to move all my candle making gear so I can put my tree up. At the moment, it feels like that might not happen and I may end up looking longingly out of the window at other people’s trees!

You can always come and gaze at mine! Which ONE product would you recommend for customers to start with?

Oh there are so many to choose from! I would recommend people try the Dark Honey and Tobacco because I think the name can put people off. It really is an amazing fragrance though. Or my personal favourite, which is mandarin and sandalwood. I have managed to perfect this fragrance in melts but the testing on candles continues. It’s my mission as I can’t live without it.

I’ll have to try these soon. What are you hoping for this Christmas?

I guess I’m hoping the same as everyone for Christmas which is that we actually have one! That being said, I’m all about looking after others so if the rules are that I have to stay at home then that’s what I’ll do.

I think we’re all hoping for that! What are your plans for Poppy Love Candles into 2021 and beyond?

I hope Poppy Love continues to grow in 2021. Hopefully I will introduce more fragrances and perhaps different sized candles too. I’m thinking I might try the three wick candles. It’s been an exciting new venture for me and one that I can honestly say I’m proud of.

Thank you so much Zoe! If you want to try Poppy Love Candles, you can find them here.
