How to Relax and Unwind

I’ve just started a new job and it is taking its toll. Don’t get me wrong, I am loving it but its long days, especially while I’m finding my feet. I’ve also over committed more than a little bit this month. What this means is that I’m desperately trying to avoid burning out. As a reminder to myself, and anyone else who needs one too, here are some ideas for relaxing and unwinding. They’re not ground-breaking but that doesn’t mean they’re not worthwhile.

  • Bake a cake
  • …And eat some cake
  • Try your hand at painting
  • Go for a walk around your local area
  • …Or pack up and go further afield to a National Trust site or local forest
  • Paint your nails
  • Sketch
  • Do an exercise class (I know but some people swear it helps)
  • Use a colouring book
  • Try sewing, cross stitch or embroidery
  • Knit!
  • Plan Christmas activities
  • Watch your favourite film
  • …Or something completely different
  • Head for a night at the theatre
  • Use a face mask
  • Light a candle
  • Put on your favourite song and dance in your kitchen
  • Have a bubble bath
  • Play cards
  • Put on some fairy lights and get cosy
  • Have a cup of tea/ hot chocolate/ coffee (and take the time to enjoy it)
  • Try some creative writing
  • Watch a documentary
  • Play a board game
  • Invite some friends over for a potluck
  • Call someone you love for a natter
  • Do some journalling
  • Look over old photos
  • Plan a treat for yourself
  • Go to the cinema
  • Online shopping
  • Do a craft you’ve saved on Pinterest and then neglected

And, of course:

  • Read a book!

Like I said, I know this isn’t a life changing list. However, all too often we spend all our time on ‘go’ and don’t stop and unwind. Some of these can be done in five minutes or less, while others involve taking an evening off. Whichever you choose, it’s important to schedule in some R&R time. I enjoy some of these more than others but I try and do at least a couple of them every week. Treat this as your reminder that you should too!

What’s your favourite way to relax? Do you push unwinding time to the side when you get busy? If so, try doing a couple of these and see if it helps.
