THINGS TO DO: Bowes Museum

Even though Bowes Museum isn’t that far from me and everyone raves about it, it isn’t somewhere I tend to go. Thankfully, I recently got a chance to rectify that. Now before we get started I should warn you that since this was a spontaneous trip with friends, I didn’t have my camera on me. I managed to get a couple of pictures on my phone but it wasn’t a priority so I apologise  in advance!

Bowes Museum is impressive from the moment you enter the property. I spent a long time just staring at the gardens and the building itself before we even went inside. I’m sure you can work out why!

While an adult ticket is £14, it does last for a full year so I was pretty impressed to find that out when I got to the ticket desk. It’s an absolute bargain, particularly because I can already tell that I am going to want to return to Bowes Museum soon (next time, I’ll bring my camera. Promise).

Inside is a mixture of permanent and rotating exhibitions. There was an impressive array of furniture, pottery, jewellery and everything else you could think of on display. I was particularly blown away by the gigantic art galleries. I could happily have spent a lot of time in there, especially as they are also home to the famous silver swan, which you can see in motion once a day at the museum. This  clockwork bird was really cool and well worth checking out if you can! People tend to crowd around it so try and get there a little early to make sure that you can see it.

During our visit, there were also exhibitions on the illustrations from BFG which was absolutely fascinating, and a fashion exhibition. This is full of wonderful designs, photographs and actual items of clothing. It was so much fun to look at the way fashion has evolved over the years!

I also couldn’t help but notice that there were plenty of activities on for children during our visit and I think it would be a fantastic place for a family day out.

We didn’t spent too long in the museum on this particular trip but I would love to go back with a little more time and my camera in hand. I can’t believe that it took me so long to get to Bowes Museum but I really hope that my return visit will happen a little sooner!
